personal project success

SUCCESS!

This job started as a result of a personal project. I was trying some new art techniques on images made of musicians during live performances. Showed the results to Mark and he immediately asked if I would design his next CD release cover and marketing materials…

Apparently he made a good choice. Here’s an email from Mark.

“Bob – I think your art work is paying off big time. The media promo started Jan 1 and I am getting more looks than the last CD. Doing some radio interviews and getting some good action on the blogs. I really think that your work is making these people pick the CD up out of the pile to further investigate. Thank you so much Bob. The reporting radio stations start next week and I will keep you posted. I sent out 200 CDs for media on 1/1 and 200 CDs on 1/24 for reporting. Pretty crazy – I will keep you posted .

Thanks again Bob – best to Holly”

I ask you… What personal project are you working on to stretch yourself? And, how are you working it into your business?

service above & beyond

“Hey! What does your bill say??!!  I’m not sure I read mine correctly…”

That was the cry when our checks were presented. Smiles passed from face to face around the table as each person read the message in the presentation folder…….

have a great nightHave a great night…

You could feel spirits lift as everyone tried to figure out what was going on. We had requested separate checks. So we each got one. Even the person who had taken the waiter aside and asked to pick up the tab had an extra smile on his face because of all the laughter washing around the table.

The smooth move by our waiter cost him only the time to jot the extra notes and pass out the fraudulent checks to the group.

Which begs this question… What small thing can you do that would delight your clients in a big way that would have them sharing YOUR story?? As evidenced by this savvy server you don’t have to give away the store to bring a smile to your customers.

Got some ideas to share?

lumix lounge live

Picture yourself sitting on a stage in a trade show booth in front of everyone. You have an earpiece reminiscent of an FBI agent and a microphone worthy of Madonna attached to the other ear. They start to count down… 4, 3, 2 and point a finger at your host Frederick Van Johnson. You are now live on a Google Plus Hangout.

Nervous?? “NAAH.” I used to be in radio and TV AND one of my best friends, Skip Cohen, is up on the platform with me. Better yet we are talking about two of my favorite subjects, photography and fine art. It was a great show and I learned a lot because there were three other Internet guests sharing their ideas.

I don’t want to tell you what Skip said because that would spoil the surprise but I gotta tell ya that guy can say some pretty funny things! Hear the interview for yourself.

marketing & art in the chicago classroom

While in classes at Summer Session at the Doubletree Hilton hotel in Oakbrook, IL we had a serious look at how to get your photography business name out through marketing… without spending a bunch of hard earned dollars. This portion of the class was about three hours and covered info like networking, business card design, price lists and press releases among other tips and tricks. Here’s some of the feedback from students –

“Bob,  The class went very well.  I don’t think I’ve had a more concise and effective marketing session.  What you do is not incorporate marketing into your workflow and lifestyle so it does not overwhelm..it just is.  I like that a lot”. Eric Wojtkun

“Bob,   Fine arts photo training from you is not for the faint of heart as your class is kind of like drinking from a fire hydrant (in a good a way).  What’s clear is you know art, photography and the business thereof. Thanks for inspiring me. Thanks for sharing. Regards,”
  Cortez A. Carter

“Bob,     If I were to summarize what I got of today’s course in one sentence. ‘ In a one day session Bob Coates delivered a high level view of how his businesses work along with a “deep dive” into his process and vision of creating photographic fine art.’ I am very glad that I chose to attend this session of SCU Summer School.  It helps re-enforce my feeling that I know I can be successful in the world of fine art photography.  It reminded my of some of my weak points in my business plan and firmed up my resolve.”      Bob Fairbairn

All in all it was a solid class and I enjoyed seeing the ‘lights go on’ in student’s eyes as they saw things they could put to use in their businesses.skip cohen university logo
