Using Post Focus Photography

It’s a feature I wasn’t sure I had a reason for but again in the studio I used the Post Focus Setting on the Lumix-G7 to focus stack to get a different look from my 45mm Macro lens. This image started with a seven second video clip with the focus point being moved by the camera as the camera searched through all of it’s focus points. I’ve found the camera to capture as little as one second of video to as much as ten seconds depending on subject matter and how deep the focus goes through the scene.

Create the Image from the Video

The steps I used were to download the video. Open it in Adobe Premiere Pro and select the still frames I wanted to work with and saved them as TIFF images. I wanted a soft and sharp movement through the final image. All 17 selected images were loaded into a single Photoshop document by using the Adobe Bridge command Tools>Photoshop> Load Files into Photoshop Layers after selecting all the images. Once the images are in Photoshop all layers were selected and under the Edit menu the Auto-Align setting was applied. Then under the Edit menu Auto Blend Layers was selected with the settings Stack Images with the Seamless Tones & Colors checked. This will take all the ‘Sharp Bits’ Of the image and mask them in.

Talking Photography Tools

The tools we have to work with like Photoshop & NIK Color EFX Pro 4 can take images to an entirely new level and I keep trying to push to see what I can do. I hope this has been a help to you and at the very least given you some inspiration to think about image making in a new light.

PS – The Google NIK entire collection of software plugins is only $149. Great suite of tools!

ottmar liebert sound bites grill photo art

Been a little bit since I’ve photographed a new artist for the ‘Wall of Fame’ at sound Bites Grill in Sedona, Arizona.

Had the great pleasure of capturing fabulous guitarist Ottmar Liebert who sold out the house and ended up performing again tonight (Monday) because he was such a popular artist.

Here’s the art piece I assembled using my Photo-Synthesis technique using Adobe Photoshop and multiple images blended together.

Initial image was captured with the Lumix GH4 and the 42.5mm f1.2 Nocticron lens. 1/60 sec 3200 ISO I love the density range that the GH4 can hold even under the LED stage lights. Three additional images were pulled from my files and using Blend Modes, Layers, Fx and Adjustment Layers came up with the final art.

cow skull fun

I’m a fan of some of Georgia O’Keeffe’s art and with her inspiration I am using multiple images and this cow skull on the fence that I photographed at the last Arizona Professional Photographers all day event where I was teaching at a Western set town called Canyon Creek Ranch… (should you ever be in the area it’s a fun place to visit with history, jeep rides, horseback riding and more)

I call this process Photo-Synthesis whereby I use multiple images and blend them together to create something that I believe is greater than the sum of the parts.texture on the fence was created with two leaf images and a sheet metal image using differing Blend Modes in Adobe Photoshop.

This image is part of my ‘play to learn’ time. ‘Play to learn time’ is important for growing your skills and stretching vision.

What have you done lately to push your skills to another level??

sunday photo/art quote 9/13

What are your goals when you make a photograph?

I came across this quote from Robert Farber (see his work here) and thought it was worth a share and some thinking on this Sunday morning.

robert farber photography quote

“I try to create emotion through a mood, an appreciation for what’s there – something people walk by every day and don’t see.” Robert Farber

I don’t now that I have a concise thought like this about my photography.

I don’t have much more to say so I’ll end on this note and ask for your thoughts while I spend time thinking about my goals in creating images.

PS – Here’s a link to some of Farber’s books, many of them quite reasonable, if you want to expand your photo library.
